FAQ's

1. Why should I get my chimney swept by a registered sweep?

A registered sweep will have been trained and assessed to ensure that they operate to the highest standards within the industry. The tools and kit they use to do the job will also have been assessed to ensure that it is up to the job and can do an efficient, effective job, leaving the chimney in a clean and safe condition to use.

2. How often should I get my chimney swept?

That depends on fuel used and the frequency with which the fire is used. All chimneys should be swept a minimum of once a year. If you burn wood, it should be swept more often to prevent the build-up of tarry residue. Coal fires also should be swept regularly to get rid of the soot build up if used on a regular basis. I can give advice on how often once I have swept it and spoken to the customer to determine the use.

3. What happens if I don’t get my chimney swept?

You run the risk of having a visit from the fire service! At best it will be several hefty men trampling through your house. At worst it will be damage to the chimney or the loss of your home if not extinguished soon enough. If you can’t prove to the insurance that you have had your chimney swept either, then they may refuse to pay. Don’t run the risk for the sake of a few pounds, have it swept regularly and have peace of mind.

4. I’ve heard that steel lined chimneys don’t need sweeping?

Absolutely wrong! No chimney is self-cleaning. In fact, a lined chimney may need sweeping more often as the diameter is smaller than a normal chimney.

5. I’m thinking of having a stove installed or work done to an existing fireplace. What should I do?

Give me a ring or email me. I will be delighted to come and have a look and discuss what you would like. Don’t leave it until the last minute though. All sweeps and installation engineers are at their busiest when the weather gets colder. Ring now to get some advice and get the work booked in, that way you avoid disappointment. I look forward to meeting you.
